Longhorn Ammo Plant

Longhorn Ammo Plant

One of my favorite places to shoot is the old Longhorn Army Ammunition Plant in east Texas. This facility was active from 1941 to 1997 producing explosives in its early days, and used later as a site for the destruction of missiles. Needless to say, there was a large amount of structures built, and due to the nature of the facility, many of these were built fairly strong and are still standing.

Since the plant closure in 1997 and following handover to the US Fish and Wildlife service in 2000 the piney woods of east Texas have been taking back the land. The juxtaposition of forest and remaining structures makes this a great location for my preferred style of photos.

I spent 3 days in the area camping at the local state park, and exploring the plant with a couple large format cameras (my Graflex 4X5 and Intrepid 8X10) and some interesting film stocks.
